We currently have a vacancy for a PhD student in Synthetic Organic Chemistry (four years, 1.0 fte) on the project ‘Unified Access to Kopsia and Aspidosperma Alkaloids by a Stereoselective Cascade Cyclization’.

Project description
This project involves the development of novel cascade reactions for the stereoselective construction of complex cage-like molecules. These reactions will then be used in the total synthesis of selected alkaloid natural products of high biological relevance. Moreover, the mechanisms of these reactions will be studied (possibly in collaboration with theoretical chemists at the VU), and the resulting natural products and analogs will be evaluated for bioactivity.

– MSc degree (or equivalent) in Synthetic Organic Chemistry or a related field;
– excellent practical skills and knowledge of organic chemistry;
– excellent command of written and spoken English;
– interest in DFT calculations is an advantage

The salary will be in accordance with university regulations for academic personnel, ranging from a minimum of € 2222 (gross per month) up to a maximum of € 2840, based on fulltime employment.

For additional information please contact Dr. Eelco Ruijter (e.ruijter@vu.nl).

Applicants are request to send (before June 8th):
– a cover letter describing the applicant’s motivation and interest in the specific research project and host group;
– a curriculum vitae;
– a complete list of grades of the MSc program;
– contact information of two references for recommendation.
