As the groups’ research technician, Elwin is responsible for a variety of things in and around the lab such as safety, purchase and maintenance of equipment, purchase of consumables and supervision of undergraduate students. In addition he works on several research projects either to aid PhD students in their final stages or to synthesize tailored molecular probes for collaborative projects with various life science researchers.

Some examples are:

Transpeptidases cross-link peptidoglycan oligopeptides to provide vital cell wall rigidity and structural support. Incorporation of a non-natural fluorescent D-amino acid enables fine spatiotemporal tracking of cell wall dynamics in certain bacteria. [1]

Nitric oxide (NO) serves as an important messenger in cellular signaling. A Cu(II) complex of the compound shown above can bind specifically to NO to generate a fluorescent complex which can be used to detect NO in numerous biological applications. [2]
